Vice President Inspects India-Funded Housing Project for Tamils in Sri Lanka
C. P. Radhakrishnan visited Sri Lanka’s hill district of Nuwara Eliya on Monday as part of his two-day official trip, where he inspected ongoing work under the India-funded Indian Housing Project. The visit included interactions with beneficiaries from the Indian-origin Tamil community.
Key Highlights
- Inspection of houses constructed under the third phase of the project
- Visit to Lidl’sdale Estate in Ragala
- Interaction with beneficiary families
- Review of progress in India-supported housing initiatives in Sri Lanka
Official Statement
During the visit, the Vice President expressed satisfaction with the progress of the housing initiative and highlighted India’s continued support for Tamils living in Sri Lanka. He said the project reflects the Government of India’s long-standing commitment to improving the living conditions of vulnerable communities abroad, particularly those with historical ties to India.
Context and Background
The Indian Housing Project is one of India’s largest grant-based assistance programmes in Sri Lanka. It was launched to provide permanent housing to displaced and economically weaker Tamil families, including those in the Northern and Eastern provinces as well as plantation areas.
So far, around 50,000 houses have been completed under various phases of the project. The initiative is being implemented in stages, with a fourth phase planned to deliver an additional 10,000 homes.
The project is part of India’s broader development partnership with Sri Lanka, focusing on infrastructure, housing, and community welfare.
Public Impact
The housing initiative aims to improve living standards for thousands of families who previously lacked stable housing. Beneficiaries include Indian-origin Tamils, many of whom work in plantation sectors and have historically faced socio-economic challenges.
Access to permanent homes is expected to enhance safety, health conditions, and overall quality of life. The programme also strengthens India-Sri Lanka ties at the community level by directly supporting grassroots development.
The Vice President’s visit underscores India’s continued engagement in Sri Lanka through development partnerships. With additional housing planned under the next phase, the Indian Housing Project is set to expand its reach, reinforcing bilateral cooperation and long-term support for vulnerable communities.
